ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Cryptography is a useful technique for systems security. Unfortunately, cryptography is complicated, and even professional cryptographers can only be aware of a small fraction of their field. This is not very encouraging for system engineers for whom security and crypto in particular is only one building block out of many. In this lecture, we will see that the situation is not so dire. In fact, to use cryptography, we don't need to know how or why crypto systems work. We only need to know *when* cryptography works and when it doesn't. Knowing the attack scenarios where cryptography is useful, we can safely use cryptography in a black-box way. In the lecture, we will cover when it is safe to use hash-functions and encryption schemes and how to use them.
